COMS2010: Efficient virtual manufacturing for MNT Print E-mail

Efficient virtual manufacturing for MNT

Abstract

Despite the economic struggles in the last two years, the demand for MNT products has grown [1], [3]. This growing demand introduces new technical and organizational challenges. On the one hand, design cycles have become shorter to meet the market needs. On the other hand, competition and product complexity have increased as each new product generation has more demanding specifications and performance requirements. Combining this with the need to innovate collaboratively, the forces driving faster and more cost effective development are fierce. New and more efficient product engineering (PE) approaches, in conjunction with more effective virtual manufacturing methods, are needed to align all ends and improve the rate of innovation.

This paper describes a top-down product engineering methodology for collaborating organizations in the MNT space. Core of this approach is a combination of standard methodologies for product development as well as project management [4]. Another key aspect of the presented PE methodology is putting the customer in the drivers’ seat [5].
